What it is
Midjourney is an image generator from Midjourney, Inc. You describe an image in a text prompt and it returns a set of candidates, which you can vary, upscale or edit. It is available on the Midjourney website and through its Discord bot. Wikipedia lists V8.1 as the current stable release (April 2026) with V8.2 following in July 2026, plus a separate Niji model for anime styles.
Who it suits
Designers, illustrators and marketers who want stylised concept art, mood boards or cover artwork and are happy to iterate on prompts. It suits people who prefer choosing among several results over precise, repeatable layouts.
Cost and limits
A press review reports four plans from $10 to $120 a month (USD; UK pricing and VAT treatment not confirmed), sold by GPU time rather than image counts. Check midjourney.com for current rates. Unlimited slower Relax mode starts on the Standard plan, and private Stealth mode needs Pro.
Midjourney's terms of service say that employees or owners of companies with more than $1,000,000 annual revenue must buy a corporate membership to use it commercially, that images are public by default unless you use a private plan, and that disputes go to arbitration in Santa Clara County, California. According to Wikipedia, the company faces copyright suits from artists, Disney and Universal.
