What it is
This is an independent editorial listing of GitHub's own product. GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI assistant for writing code. It runs inside editors such as Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, the JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Xcode and Eclipse, on github.com and in GitHub Mobile, and from the terminal through a command-line tool. GitHub is a subsidiary of Microsoft, which bought it in 2018.
Models and usage limits
Paid plans let you choose between models from providers including Anthropic and OpenAI. GitHub's documentation says usage is metered in GitHub AI Credits: Pro includes 1,500 credits a month, Pro+ 7,000 and Max 20,000. Inline suggestions are unlimited on paid individual plans, while the Free plan caps them at 2,000 a month.
Who it suits
Individual developers who want an assistant in the editor they already use, and teams hosted on GitHub who want code review and agents tied to pull requests and issues. GitHub's documentation lists integrations with Slack, Microsoft Teams, Jira, Linear and Azure Boards, and support for MCP servers.
Where it falls short
Usage is metered in monthly AI Credits, so heavy use may consume the allowance. Business and Enterprise are priced per granted seat. Prices are quoted in US dollars, and we could not confirm a UK price or VAT treatment. GitHub has a public REST API for managing and monitoring Copilot (seats, metrics, content exclusion), but it offers no public completion or inference API.
