What it is

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose AI assistant. You type or talk to it, and it answers questions, writes, searches the web, analyses files and data, and creates images. It runs on the web, in apps for iOS and Android, and in a desktop app for Windows and Mac that brings together Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex.

What you can do with it

  • Chat about anything. Everyday text chat is unlimited on every plan, subject to abuse guardrails.
  • Search the web for up-to-date answers.
  • Upload files, images and spreadsheets and ask about them, with data analysis in Python.
  • Create and edit images from a description.
  • Hold voice conversations, including voice with video.
  • Run deep research for longer reports built from many sources.
  • Keep work in Projects, let it remember past chats, and schedule tasks (Plus and above).
  • Use Codex for coding and ChatGPT Work for longer tasks from the desktop app.
  • Work inside Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets through extensions.

Plans and prices

  • Free: GPT-5.6 Luna, with limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and memory. Ads may appear in some regions.
  • Go: more messages with tools, more uploads, images and voice, and longer memory. £6.99 a month in the UK App Store. May include ads.
  • Plus: adds OpenAI's GPT-6 reasoning models, expanded deep research, Projects and scheduled tasks, and early access to new features, with no ads. £19.99 a month in the UK App Store, or $20 a month on the web.
  • Pro: three monthly tiers, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500, at $100, $200 and $500 on the web, or £88.90, £200 and £444.99 in the UK App Store. Adds Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra and the highest limits. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast.
  • Business: at least 2 seats. Standard seats are $25 per user a month, or $20 billed annually. Premium seats are $125, or $100 billed annually, with 5x the usage.
  • Enterprise and Edu: priced through OpenAI's sales team.

Web prices above are in US dollars. OpenAI also bills UK customers in pounds on the web, so check the price at checkout.

Limits

Uploads, image creation, voice and data analysis have their own caps on every plan, and an advanced model becomes unavailable until its allowance resets. The Free plan has a small context window: about 12 pages of text in one message with GPT Instant, against about 40 on Go and Plus and about 250 on Pro. On personal plans OpenAI can use your chats to train its models unless you opt out. New Pro 200 subscriptions get a lower usage allowance than before. Answers can be wrong, so check anything that matters. Using OpenAI's API is a separate product with separate billing.
