What it is
Elements of AI is a free online course created by the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn (formerly Reaktor Education), first launched in 2018. It has two independent parts: Introduction to AI, covering what AI is, its real-world uses and its limits, with no maths or programming required; and Building AI, which teaches the algorithms behind machine learning and recommends basic Python skills.
Who it's for
Introduction to AI suits complete beginners with no technical background. Building AI suits learners who already have some Python experience and want to move from AI literacy to writing simple AI code.
Format and time
Both parts are self-paced with no fixed start date. The provider's own FAQ estimates 4–8 hours to complete each part of Introduction to AI, and around 50 hours in total for Building AI, and suggests aiming to finish within six weeks.
Assessment and certificates
To pass Introduction to AI, learners must attempt at least 90% of the exercises and answer 50% correctly; some exercises are only marked complete after giving and receiving peer reviews. Building AI requires completing at least 19 of 21 exercises with 50% correct answers. The Introduction to AI certificate is free on passing; a Building AI certificate costs €50, including VAT where applicable.
Price
Course content for both parts is free to study. The only cost is the optional €50 Building AI certificate.
