What it is
The AWS Certified AI Practitioner (exam code AIF-C01) is Amazon Web Services' foundational-level credential for AI and generative AI on AWS. AWS's own certification page describes it for "individuals who want to validate foundational knowledge of AI/ML concepts and generative AI on AWS," and states it does not require candidates to build AI/ML solutions themselves.
Format and syllabus
The exam is 65 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions in 90 minutes, covering AI, ML and generative AI concepts and their use cases on AWS services, plus responsible use of AI tools. There is no taught syllabus or course attached — candidates study independently (AWS points newcomers to its free AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials or AWS Technical Essentials courses first) then sit the assessment.
Prerequisites and level
AWS states no formal prerequisites, describing the target candidate as familiar with AI/ML technologies and their business uses on AWS. This is treated here as beginner level.
Where and how to sit it
AWS's page lists testing options as "Pearson VUE testing center or online proctored exam." UK candidates can search for a nearby Pearson VUE test centre via the AWS exam scheduling portal, or sit the exam online via 24/7 proctoring. Scheduling requires creating an AWS Certification account first.
Price and validity
The exam costs $100 USD, charged in dollars at registration. The certification is valid for three years, after which recertification is by retaking the exam or by earning the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate certification.
